Jupiter may explain our unusual solar system

Jupiter once caromed like a giant billiard ball through our inner solar system, shattering nascent planets and clearing out the once-crowded community around our sun, UC Santa Cruz astronomers say in a new report. Then it retreated into its now-mannerly orbit. And a second generation of inner planets -- Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars -- formed out of the debris left behind.
