A reader recently questioned the motivations of givers, suggesting on the Camera's website that the only true philanthropy is the anonymous gift. How wonderful it would be if all givers were perfect altruists, self-directed, generous at the limits of their capacity, and knowledgeable about determining and insuring the desired outcome.
